In most villages, a bonfire is lit in the square on Christmas eve, and will be kept burning until New Year. In times gone by, families would sit in front of the fire before midnight and tell stories or make wishes whilst throwing olive leaves or grain into the fire before making their way to Midnight mass which is perhaps the most important event on the Christmas calendar.

In Corsica, Christmas dinner is traditionally served on Christmas Eve after mass has been held, and will include roast cabri (baby goat) followed by 'A Ceppu di Natale' which is the Corsican version of the Yule Log made with chocolate and chestnuts, and decorated with marzipan, fruits confits, meringues and nougats. Families decorate their tables with a bowl of 13 different fruits which is thought to represent Jesus and the 12 disciples.

FLIGHT INFORMATION - winter holidays

If you want to travel to Corsica during the winter, the easiest way to do this is to take a low cost flight down to Nice or Marseille and then catch a connection across to Corsica from there. Unfortunately, we do not have an agreement to arrange scheduled flights, so you would need to investigate these options yourself, but to help you, we have added lots of useful information and links to the various airline websites from our sister website www.holidaysincorsica.co.uk - simply choose TRAVEL TO CORSICA from the main menu. EasyJet and other low cost airlines offer cheap flights to both Nice and Marseille (best booked online). Click HERE for a list of regional flights with low cost airlines.
