The house itself is arranged in an L-shape with all rooms leading onto
the central courtyard. The owners have managed to retain many of the original features including superb reclaimed
wooden doors and even the original iron rings set into the bricks on the outside of the house where the animals
would once have been tethered. Inside, La Vaccaja has been furnished as a home rather than a rental property, so
guests will appreciate the extra comforts of home as well as antique furniture and objets dotted here and there.
The main access to the house is via French windows into the spacious sitting room. Here guests will find comfortable
sitting furniture and a dining table and chairs, although the owner tells us that most people prefer to eat on
the covered terrace or in the courtyard if the sun is not too hot. This room leads onto the family style kitchen
which has been very well equipped with washing machine, dishwasher, full oven and hob, plus a microwave. The kitchen
sits in the corner or the 'L' and the windows look out over the parkland. There are three bedrooms in total; two
with double beds and one with twin beds, plus two bathrooms; one with bath and toilet and the other with shower
and toilet. The bedrooms and bathrooms are arranged in a line along the main side of the house and lead from one
to another, but all the bedrooms have French windows leading onto the courtyard terrace, which means that you can
cross from one room to another without having to walk through the other bedrooms.
Set to the side of the courtyard terrace is the large pool. Unusual in design, it measures 14m x 3.5m so it is
equally suited to those who want to play and cool down after a day in the sun, as well as the more energetic who
may want to get in a few laps before breakfast. Just next to the pool is a large covered pergola that offers dappled
shade if you want to escape the heat of the day. The enormous olive tree close to the courtyard has stood in the
grounds for 300 years and is protected by a shallow wall encircling it. The gardens and courtyard are the perfect
place to enjoy an aperitif and drink in the peaceful countryside atmosphere before heading into the chic resort
of Calvi for dinner on the port, or perhaps in one of the quaint cobbled streets below the Citadel.
Calvi is a fantastic place to holiday, particularly if you've never been to Corsica before. The picture-postcard
pretty harbour is lined with vibrant cafes and restaurants, and the Citadel is steeped in history. The beautiful
sandy beach which stretches for nearly 6km, is closeby and there are plenty of intimate coves heading out towards
the peninsular if you want somewhere quieter. For those who like to explore, there is a little train which runs
along the coast stopping at all the villages en-route, or you can connect for the service that runs through the
mountains - breath-taking.
La Vaccaja is situated approximately 2km from the centre of town and the citadel, although the beach is much closer
- approximately 900m - so this house is ideal for those looking for a beautifully authentic property still within
easy reach of the shops, restaurants and superb sandy beaches. Equally suited to couples and families alike.
