Have you ever gone for a long country walk and wished you had someone to carry the
picnic basket, camera, bottles of water, and other items essential for the enjoyment of a hike? Dominique Boyer
in the village of Olmi Cappella has the answer.
Under the title of 'Balagn'ane' (ane being the French word for donkey), she will hire you one of her much loved
and cossetted donkeys to join you on your walk and carry all your belongings - including a small child if you like.
Ours was called Sirocco, which means hot wind and gave rise to quite a few jokes.
You collect the donkey (or donkeys if you have a big party) from Dominique in the village complete with traditional
luggage rack and leading rope, and set off on one of the many suitable walks that Dominique will suggest. You could
for example walk down to the river Tartagine, tie up your four legged friend, and sit and enjoy a leisurely picnic
before sauntering back.
For the more adventurous, you can hire a donkey for a few days, set off to walk to, say, Galeria on the wast coast,
or St. Florent in the north east, and have the donkey collected from the point where you end your walk. There is
even the possibility to walk from Ostriconi to St. Florent along the coastal footpath which skirts the Desert des
Agriates, picking up your donkey at the beginning of your walk and leaving it in St. Florent.
Only disadvantage is that donkeys do like to stop and taste the plants and flowers growing along the footpaths,
so be prepared for a slow relaxed pace!
Prices start at 43 euros for 1 donkey for a day to 202 euros for 5 days. Having your donkey collected from Galeria
or St. Florent will cost 54 euros, and the coastal footpath option costs an additional 77 euros.
Walking with donkeys is particularly easy if you are staying in Olmi-Cappella, and
we have three lovely properties in the village;
Antonia's
chambre d'hote (B&B) - ideal for couples
Apartment
les Tilleuls - 1 bedroom, sleeps 2-4 people
Casa
Altiani - 5 bedrooms, sleeps 10 people
If you happen to be staying with Antonia, for a little extra she will make you a
copious picnic for your excursion, and as the former chef of the renowned restaurant 'La Tornadia' you can be sure
it will be absolutely delicious!
