Standing on the Place de l'Eglise in the lower part of the historic village
of Olmeto, the Santa Maria is a lovely little hotel, full of character and charm.
Olmeto is a beautiful old granite village that stretches up the hillside
above the plain of Propriano. Connected by a network of footpaths and steps, here you can truly immerse yourself
in village life and experience the Corsica of old, yet the delightful beaches and bustling little resort of Propriano
are just a short drive away.
There are just twelve comfortable bedrooms, each with en-suite bathroom,
hairdryer, direct dial telephone, television, and mini-bar. Air conditioning has recently been added for your comfort.
The rooms on the top floor have balconies with views over the village, whilst the top floor bedrooms boast magnificent
far-reaching views over the Gulf of Valinco. The position of the hotel at the heart of the historic centre of Olmeto,
means that you can enjoy a peaceful and relaxing stay even during the height of the season.
At the Santa Maria, you can choose either bed and breakfast, or half hoard (except during August when half board
is obligatory). Below the hotel is the delightful restaurant 'Chez Mimi'. The main room of the restaurant dates
back to the 17th century. Converted from an old Olive Mill, the beautiful vaulted ceiling has been carefully preserved
and today is one of the talking points for the patrons.
Marie Buresi, or 'Mimi' as she is affectionately known throughout the region, presides over the kitchen and offers
an unequalled range of delicious local specialities and traditional dishes such as courgettes stuffed with Brocciu,
sauté of veal, locally cured charcuterie and a range of creamy cheeses. Of course, no meal in Corsica would
be complete without trying some of the excellent wine and the reds of the Sartenais are particularly good.
There are a number of curiosities to explore in the area such as the 16th century Church of Sainte-Marie and its
famous organs, an impressive ancient menhir (standing stone) of 3.75m, the ruins of the castle of the della Rocca
and the Holy Convent of Saint François. For those who like to explore, the trail of old craft traditions
at Olmeto and the 'Route des Sens Authentiques' will take you on a journey to explore pipe, knife and ceramic factories
as well as specialities of local produce. However, the beaches of Olmeto Plage are some of the best in the region!
