The stunning beaches and breathtaking mountains of Corsica

Hôtel-Restaurant u Ricordu, Macinaggio ***
Swimming pool, garden/terrace, WiFi internet access, restaurant, bar, phone in room, TV in room, air conditioning, parking

Perched at the top of Cap Corse, Macinaggio is a bustling little port full of colourful fishing boats, beautiful walking trails, pretty coves and an interesting history.

Just on the edge of Macinaggio, is the Hotel-Restaurant u Ricordu. There are 54 rooms in all, each with air conditioning, television and direct dial telephone. There is a WiFi hotspot in the reception area, and another in the modern bar where you can enjoy an aperitif before dinner should you wish. U Ricordu offers a range of different rooms. On the ground floor are double/twin rooms and triple rooms, each with a terrace. The rooms on the first floor are again a mix of doubles/twins and triple rooms which each have a balcony equipped with a table and chairs. These rooms are slighly more private, and enjoy views either over the maquis at the bak of the hotel, or the pool at the front. The standard rooms are all located on the second floor. These rooms don't have balconies or terraces, but their elevated position means that most of the rooms at the front of the hotel have side sea views. The hotel also boasts a number or quadruple/family rooms. These are limited in number and vary in layout, but most are spacious with a double bed with bunk beds. There is also one family room with twin beds and a mezzanine level above with double bed. The triple rooms all have showers, but it is possible to request either a bath or shower if you are reserving a double, twin or family room. All the bathrooms are equipped with hairdryers.

Outside there are terraced and a large shared pool which is heated so it is possible to swim from early season right through until the autumn. The Hotel u Ricordu has three dining areas, and offers a reasonable set menu for those taking the half board option. The building itself is fairly simple in design, but the facilities are good and the staff are friendly, welcoming, and happy to help you arrange days out, boat trips and even mountain bike hire for the more active guests.

The best time to explore this beautiful region is spring when the spring flowers are in bloom and give off a heavenly scent. In the summer, the port is busiers and offers a much more vibrant ambiance. For keen walkers, there are plenty of marked tracks and hidden treasures accessible only on foot. The 'Sentier des Douaniers' is the ancient footpath that customs officers patrolled in days gone by in an effort to curb smuggling, and runs along the coast from Macinaggio to Centuri Port via the pretty post of Macinaggio, Genoese towers, the Chapel of Sainte Marie and some beatuful little coves. The full route takes approximately 7 hours 45 minutes through the fragrant maquis, but it is possible to do shorter circuits of anything from an hour to 4 hours. There is also a boat that runs from Macinaggio to Barcaggio (normaly May to September) so you can set off with your packed lunch in the morning, walk to Barcaggio and then take a scenic boat ride back to base. The area is a haven for nature lovers with protected nature areas and a plenty of opportunities for bird watching - if you're lucky, you may even see a flying fish! On the northern tip is the nature reserve of Finocchiarola where one can find the Audoin gulls as well as the beaches of Sainte Marie and Tamarone.

One cannot talk of Cap Corse without mentioning the Moulin de Mattei just outside Rogliano.
Since 1872 the Mattei family have exported their aperitifs, wines and liqueurs all around the world, and today still produce 'Cap Corse' which is a fortified aperitif that can be found in bars all across the island. The windmill has since been restored, and occupies an amazing position with panoramic views. The walk takes about half an hour there and back from the car park, but it is well worth it when you reach the top!

It is also worth taking some time to simply drive round the Cap, stopping off wherever something catches your eye. Centuri Port is worth a visit - if you want to take some picture-postcard holiday snaps, it's west to visit in the afternoon when the sun will be in the right place. Rogliano is another pretty village with two churches, some ruins and a convent.
