The stunning beaches and breathtaking mountains of Corsica

Corsica is a ramblers paradise with a network of footpaths ranging from gentle woodland walks and invigorating coastal paths to more challenging hikes across the mountainous interior, including the famous GR20 long-distance trail.

In spring, the island is in bloom, and the greenest island in the Mediterranean becomes a mass of colour; vibrant red poppies, bright yellow broom and of course violets, the symbol of the Bonapartist party. The heady scent of the maquis - a dense carpet of fragrant shrubs, wild herbs, bushes and trees - fills the air, and it is the perfect time to explore. Amongst the maquis, one can find an extraordinary amount of varied flora and fauna, from the Arbutus (Strawberry tree) who's honey the ancient Romans held responsible for the longevity of the Corsicans, to the Sitelle (Corsican Nuthatch), a little bird easily recognisable by its habit of walking head-first down pine trunks! In autumn, the island is warmed by mellow sunlight, and the hills are carpeted with cyclamen, autumn crocuses and an incredible range of funghi.

Walking... In Company

Our friends at Corsica in Company offer a range of guided walks across a variety of terrains, designed to give you a taste of Corsica's rich diversity. All walks are suitable for adults of all ages and of reasonable fitness (regular walker rather than serious hiker) equivalent to the Ramblers Association rating of D to D+, so moderate terrain with some energetic passages. We may vary the itinerary depending on overall group ability and weather conditions.

Each day, except your arrival/departure day and your free day, you will make a minibus trip then a guided walk of about 4 to 6 hours with a picnic lunch. You normally stop at a place of cultural interest such as an olive mill, a Genoese bridge, a prehistoric monument, a vineyard or maybe just for a bit of shopping, before returning to your accommodation in the late afternoon. In the evenings you will enjoy a relaxed and convivial meal of local dishes and wine in a variety of local restaurants and auberges.

A typical week...

A typical week normally includes a walk along the Campomoro coastal path with its extraordinary eroded rocks; the undulating heathland and woods of the Alta Rocca; the summit of Monte San Petru (alt. 1400 metres) with far reaching views to Ajaccio and Sardinia; the stunning craggy landscape and pine forests of the Col de Bavella and the imposing limestone cliffs that overlook the natural harbour of Bonifacio. Each day, except for your arrival/departure day and your free day, you will take a minibus trip and a guided walk of about 4 to 6 hours, with a picnic lunch. You will normally stop at a place of cultural interest such as an olive mill, a Genoese bridge, a prehistoric monument, a vineyard or maybe just for a bit of shopping, before returning to Pratu in the late afternoon. In the evenings you will be taken to a variety of local restaurants or auberges to enjoy a relaxed and convivial meal of local dishes and wine. (The itinerary may vary depending on overall group ability and weather conditions).

The countryside is home to the mouflon (wild mountain sheep) and also to a number of endemic species such as the swallow-tail butterfly, fire salamander and of course the ubiquitous sanglier (wild boar). As well as its range of indiginous birdlife, Corsica is also host to many migratory species, including unusual visitors. Chough, red kite, buzzard, raven, crossbills, nuthatch, lammergeier and many types of eagle range across the mountains, whilst great spotted woodpecker, cirl bunting, citril finch, wren, hawfinch, Sardinian warbler and wryneck are some of the many species found in the Taravo Valley.

Corsica's national park, the Parc Naturel Regional de la Corse (PNRC) covers about a third of the island and was created in 1972. The mountainous Alta Rocca region of the park borders the beautiful Taravo Valley and can be easily reached from our accommodation.

The local footpaths at Pratu, part of an extensive network used in traditional shepherding, will take you through woodlands of holm and cork oaks, fig, ancient olive groves, gurgling streams and crumbling stone terraces. Plants seen here include cystus, cyclamen (spring and autumn varieties), wood anemone, asphodels, fragrant clematis, wild asparagus, 'friar's cowl', plus several types of orchid, lily, broomrape and stonecrop.
