Without doubt one of the most unique and intriguing houses in Corsica,
La Piazza Ronda was originally an old wine tower that has been extensively renovated over recent years to create
an unusual and interesting place to holiday.
A staggering fourteen metres in diameter, the house is built over four floors. The ground floor opens onto a round
hallway with seating and a huge fireplace. From here, a few steps lead up to a circular walkway with access to
the main kitchen (there are more!), an open plan living/dining room with doors to a large terrace, two double bedrooms,
a shower room, toilet and the lift to the second floor. Stairs lead to the first floor where there is a large double
bedroom with en-suite bathroom, a twin bedroom and a separate toilet. Most of the bedrooms have a television, and
there is satellite television in the sitting room on the second floor.
Like many houses in Corsica, La Piazza Ronda is built on sloping ground, so there is also a lower ground floor
with a circular library and three further bedrooms; two doubles and a bunk-bedded room, a shower and toilet. From
here, one has access to the main terrace where there is a large dining table and chairs, and a well equipped summer
kitchen with dishwasher, fridge and hob - perfect for al-fresco living.
Steps lead down to the large pool (10x5m) and mature garden at the back of the tower. The gardens are home to ancient
olive trees that still bear fruit, and mature shrubs and plants that flower vibrant colours in the summer months.
The swimming pool is surrounded by duckboarding with loungers where one can sit and soak up the Mediterranean sun,
but for those who prefer the shade, there is a another covered terrace area with seating at the shallow end. Next
to the summer terrace is a new luxury jacuzzi/spa for 6 people with a cascade, aromatherapy and a sun terrace.
There is also an outside shower.
All the rooms have been decorated with flair and style and each has a
character all its own. The house is filled with antiques and pieces of handmade furniture, and original artwork
and paintings adorn the walls. However, the jewel in the crown is the magnificent second floor.
Under the domed roof is a semicircular sitting room with comfortable
sofas and colonial inspired chairs, where one can sit and enjoy the views of Propriano through the panoramic windows
that line the room. There is another kitchen on this floor with a small dining table. There is also a master bedroom
which is separated from the main sitting room by screens, and which has a private bathroom and toilet.
Propriano, the principal town of the region, has an attractive, lively
port with many good restaurants which make it a popular choice for visitors. The Gulf of Valinco which is perhaps
the most beautiful gulf on the west coast of the island, and the area is surrounded by lovely beaches such as Campomoro
to the south and Cappiciolo to the north - perhaps one of the best spots on the Gulf with it's picturesque coves
of golden sand fringed by rocks.
