The stunning beaches and breathtaking mountains of Corsica

Casa Mince, Montemaggiore

1 bedrooms, sleeps 2-3 people

Character property, lovely views, peaceful, village location

At the heart of the picturesque village of Montemaggiore is Casa Mincè, a beautifully restored apartment in an ancient village house with superb views over the bay of Calvi an the surrounding mountains.

Full of character, the Casa Mincè is just the place for those who want experience real village life in a charming environment, with all the modern comforts of home.

Access to the apartment is via the patio which is reached from an old vaulted stairway. The kitchen is fully equipped with a full cooker and microwave as well as the usual kitchen equipment such as dishwasher and a good sized fridge-freezer - ideal for ice creams in the summer! The main room is open plan, and has a stylish wrought iron and glass dining table, double sofabed, television and french doors leading onto the terrace. The owners have also provided TNT which is the local equivalent of freeview and does include one or two English channels. Furnished with style and taste, there are lots of nice features such as the beamed ceileings and original built in wooden cupboards that have been loving restored by the proprietors. There is a large double bedroom and a newly refitted modern shower room and toilet. The utility area is outside and is home to a further freezer and the washing machine.

However, the proprietors tells us that it is the terrace where guests spend most of their time. Spacious and very sunny, here one can relax and while away the hours admiring the granite peaks of Monte Grosso which take on a beautiful russet colour at sunset. The terrace has been furnished with a large table and chairs as well as a parasol to provide shade during the heat of the day.

Known as the Garden of Corsica, the Balagne is an area of lush countryside with a stunning mountain backdrop, and is famous for its ring of perched villages of which Montemaggiore is a typical example. Set on a promontory with Monte Grosso rising to 9,000 feet behind, the village has been awarded a two star rating by the Michelin Green guide for its stunning panoramic views. The best of these are from the foot of the 17th Century baroque church, or from the rocky outcrop A Cima at the edge of the village from where you can see right across the ruins of old Montemaggiore to Calvi on one side of the valley and to the peaks of Monte Grosso on the other.

The village has a small local café/restaurant, local produce is on sale nearby and food vans call with various foodstuffs, so you won't need to leave the village unless you want to explore.

Montemaggiore is famous for its Olive fair (Fiera di l'Alivu) normally the third week of July. This annual event marks a weekend of exhibitions and tasting by all the local Olive producers, and culminates in a prize giving ceremony for the best oil of the year. At other times of the year, why not visit the Domaine d'Alzipratu where you can taste (and of course buy) the excellent local wine - the Rosé and Red are particularly good, and of course there are various fetes and fayres throughout the year, the most notable of which is the 15th August when the whole island celebrates assumption with some amazing firework displays!

Of course the beach resort of Calvi and Ile Rousse are never far away with their range water sports (jet ski, diving, sailing, windsurfing) and boat trips to the nearby nature reserve of Scandola. In the village itself, there are several places for a quiet game of boules, and a tennis court by the old fashioned school - there is even hang gliding on offer nearby!

Comments from previous guests...

'We really loved this place. The village is in a spectacular position, overlooking Calvi and the sea on one side, and on the other (in full view from the terrace of the apartment) a panorama of Monte Grosso and the villages at its foot. The apartment is beautifully furnished and equipped, and the owners, who live just down the road, could not have been more welcoming and helpful. Calvi, with its tremendous citadel, and beaches and shops, is a 20-minute drive down the hill (four hairpin bends just below the church!), and if you take the road over the mountain towards Cateri there are endless views and fascinating villages perched on the hillsides around the coast all the way to Isle Rousse and beyond. But the most impressive local drive (and you do need a car for this holiday) is between Calvi and Galeria along the coast. We also visited St Florent, Corte and Bastia, all worth the drive over the mountains.'

'We got back home yesterday and it was such a pleasure to receive your email and dramatic photograph today. We want to say once again how much we enjoyed our stay in your lovely apartment and to thank you for the delicious biscuits and for the wine. How kind of you to bring us a second bottle for our second week. We so enjoyed our time with you on the terrace, and wish we had had longer to chat.'

We would just like to say a very big Thank You for a wonderful week we had in your apartment in Montemaggiore, the view from the terrace are wonderful and the apartment is so well equipped to meet all our needs. All these things and the lovely countryside of Corsica really made our holiday. Our second week in Corsica was spent in the South in a very different location; we have to admit the accommodation was not up to the very high stranded as your apartment, a disappointment for us. Corsica is a beautiful country which we greatly enjoyed the beaches are so crystal clear and the mountains are breathtaking. We very much appreciate your kindness in making our holiday special.'

'If you plan to come to the northern part of Corsica and stay in a peaceful and charming place, close to the nice beaches but also mountains this is the one. We have spent only one week there and would definitely like to come again. The apartment is nice and lovely and the view from the terrace is breathtaking. You are welcomed by a sweet landlady that packed everything you need in a stylistic apartment. As we had an active holiday we did not get to know people from the village. We left that for the next time ...'
