In a superb position nestled at the very edge of the impressive mountains of the
Balagne and yet still just a short drive from the sandy beaches and lively resort towns of Calvi and Ile Rousse,
the picturesque village of Montemaggiore offers visitors a real taste of Corsican life.
Casa A Cima is a beautifully restored village house within walking distance of the village restaurant and local
bar. Typical of the region, A Cima offers flexible living space and a balcony from which one can admire the lovely
views over the terracotta roof tiles to the bay of Calvi.
Stone steps lined with flowers and pot plants lead up from street level to the main entrance, which like many village
houses is actually the first floor. The door is original and retains its original mechanisms which lend the house
an air of authenticity right from the start. The door opens onto a living room area equipped with flat screen television,
books and traditional games such as solitaire board, and a comfortable sofabed with full thickness mattress. The
owners have also provided TNT which is the local equivalent of freeview and does include one or two English channels.
Tucked away behind this room is the good size bathroom with toilet, bidet and bath with shower attachment over.
Traditional open tread stairs lead up to the first floor where there is a well equipped kitchen corner comprising,
full oven and hob, dishwasher, microwave, toaster and of course a cafetiere for coffee and croissants on the balcony
leading off the dining room. Another flight of stairs leads up to the large bedroom which covers the whole top
floor of the house. This room is ideal as a spacious family room for 2 adults plus up to two small childen, or
just a couple. It has been furnished with a double bed, plus a small convertible bed which would be suitable for
little ones, and a cot. This room offers lovely views over the village rooftops to the church in one direction,
and the bay of Calvi and citadel in the other.
Thoughtfully furnished and equipped throughout by the friendly owners, A Cima is the perfect choice for those who
want a comfortable and authentic base from which to explore this lovely area of Corsica.
Known as the Garden of Corsica, the Balagne is an area of lush countryside with a stunning mountain backdrop, and
is famous for its ring of perched villages of which Montemaggiore is a typical example. Set on a promontory with
Monte Grosso rising to 9,000 feet behind, the village has been awarded a two star rating by the Michelin Green
guide for its stunning panoramic views. The best of these are from the foot of the 17th Century baroque church,
or from the rocky outcrop A Cima at the edge of the village from where you can see right across the ruins of old
Montemaggiore to Calvi on one side of the valley and to the peaks of Monte Grosso on the other.
The village has a small local café/restaurant, local produce is on sale nearby and food vans call with various
foodstuffs, so you won't need to leave the village unless you want to explore.
Montemaggiore is famous for its Olive fair (Fiera di l'Alivu) normally the third week of July. This annual event
marks a weekend of exhibitions and tasting by all the local Olive producers, and culminates in a prize giving ceremony
for the best oil of the year. At other times of the year, why not visit the Domaine d'Alzipratu where you can taste
(and of course buy) the excellent local wine - the Rosé and Red are particularly good, and of course there
are various fetes and fayres throughout the year, the most notable of which is the 15th August when the whole island
celebrates assumption with some amazing firework displays!
Of course the beach resort of Calvi and Ile Rousse are never far away with their range water sports (jet ski, diving,
sailing, windsurfing) and boat trips to the nearby nature reserve of Scandola. In the village itself, there are
several places for a quiet game of boules, and a tennis court by the old fashioned school - there is even hang
gliding on offer nearby!
Linen is included in the price of the rental.
