Just a short walk from the centre of town, and a little further from
the sea and nearest beach, Apartment Balestrino is the perfect choice for those who want to experience the mild
climate and convivial atmosphere of the Imperial City of Ajaccio.
On the fourth floor of a fairly modern building with lift, landscaped grounds and a car park, the apartment opens
into a hallway with storage space and toilet to the right, go straight on to the fully fitted modern kitchen equipped
with brand new appliances such as electric oven and hob, dishwasher and fridge-freezer. A loggia off the kitchen,
with washing machine, is used as a utility room. The light and airy double aspect living room is a good size and
has a double sofa bed. Sliding patio doors lead onto the main covered terrace furnished with garden table and chairs
for eating outside and enjoying the view to the sea through the olive trees below. The new bathroom is next to
the double bedroom which leads onto the covered terrace through more sliding patio doors. From Apartment Balestrino
you can walk to some shops and restaurants in only a few minutes, and strolling into the main part of town will
take just 10 - 15 minutes, perhaps a little longer on the way back as its uphill ! The apartment is in a residential
quartier, close to the Bois des Anglais, and some municipal tennis courts, but at the same time you can reach the
hubbub of town easily, so probably this is the best of both worlds!
Ajaccio is the birthplace of the island's most famous son, Napoléon Bonaparte. In the summer the tourist
office organises a number of walks to help visitors discover this intriguing city; cultural themes such as the
Genoese tour or Napoleon tour, or perhaps you would prefer to just stroll - through the old town or along rue Fesch
where you can marvel at the Italianate balconies and sun bleached shutters that have stood the test of time. Follow
the Boulevard du Roi Jerome to the colourful morning market and join the locals buying fresh fruit, vegetables,
Corsican cheeses, charcuterie and other specialities. There is also a fish market where you can compete with the
Ajacciens for the catch of the day! This town has character all of its own, which makes it an ideal holiday destination
for one or two weeks, as well as a complete contrast to some of the other areas, for those looking for a two centre
holiday.
It is quite easy to explore Ajaccio on foot as the city is fairly compact. A short walk from Apartment Balestrino
will take you to the Cours Grandval and Cours Napoléon, where you can find many museums and historical sites,
the beach and a wide range of restaurants and boutiques. There is even a Casino if you fancy a change of scene.
With so much to see and do on your doorstep, it may be hard to tear yourself away, but hire a car even for just
a few days and you'll have the freedom to explore the maquis covered hillsides, traditional stone built villages
and magnificant sandy beaches. Why not follow the road out to Parata point where you can watch the sunset over
the Iles Sanguinaires (literally the Bloody Islands) a collection of dark red rocks jutting up from the sea. Of
course you could just relax on the town beach of St François, which is watched over by the 15th Century
citadel, or enjoy a glass of sun-blushed wine in one of the many piazzas and while away the time just as the Ajacciens
do.
If you choose not to hire a car, this needn't stop you getting to know the island as there are trains to take you
inland to Corte or even Calvi or Bastia, boat trips to the Scandola Nature Reserve, a boat navette crosses the
golfe of Ajaccio to Porticcio, book a coach excursion, take a bus to Les Iles Sanguinaires, and just behind the
apartment a walk starts along the Chemin des Cretes to the observatoire.
