Perched high on the hillside, overlooking the chestnut trees and olive
groves of the Ostriconi valley, the mediaeval villa of Lama is a unique and special place to stay. Surrounded by
high mountain peaks, with breath-taking views to the coast just 15 minutes drive away, the village is a lovely
place to spend a holiday in a typically Corsican environment.
La Vielle Maison is a traditional apartment on the ground floor of one of Lama's most beautiful (and most photographed)
old houses. It is centrally, but quietly situated at the heart of the village, and benefits from a terrace/garden
with lovely views across the valley to the sea. The apartment itself retains many original and unique features,
but has been well modernized and equipped.
An ancient gateway leads to the doorway which opens onto the main living/dining room where there is a sofa, dining
table and chairs and a kitchen corner with cooker and washing machine. From here there are lovely views over the
surrounding countryside, and French doors leading to stairs down to the garden/terrace. There are two bedrooms;
a double and a twin. The double room features an interesting exposed wall where the building has been carved into
the hillside. There is a small shower room and separate toilet.
The village boasts a large swimming pool which is open from mid-June - September, and tennis courts which are open
to guests (bring your own rackets/balls). There are also a few restaurants serving local specialities, and a small
village shop. Mobile shops visit regularly with meat and bread, and there is a supermarket and a small commercial
centre at Ponte Leccia, just a short drive away.
At 2000 feet above sea level, Lama is pleasantly cooler during the sweltering summer months, allowing you to wander
the old stone footpaths catching glimpses of the sea, whilst a short 15-20 minute drive brings you to Ostriconi
Plage - a lovely sandy beach and nature reserve. A Balanina (the new road linking the Balagne with the centre of
the island) passes within 3km of the village centre making the coastal towns of Calvi and Ile Rousse, or the ancient
capital of Corte easily accessible. A former stable in the village centre houses a collection of old photographs,
and each August the village plays host to a wonderful open-air film festival. Each year the theme is 'Le cinema
a la campagne, et la campagne au cinema' with each of the films featured set in rural country locations.
Linen is included in the rental.

'Our second week in the mountain village of Lama was a good contrast.
The property was very comfortable and again the owner went out of her way to welcome us.The property was very authentic
and we enjoyed some excellent walks from the village.Highlights of the trip must include swimming in the gorges
near Calacuccia and the wonderful views from the Foret du Bonifatio outside Calvi. An excellent holiday and we appreciated
all your advice. Thank you'
'Lama is a special place and it seems surprisng that it features
so little in the guides to Corsica. La Vieille Maison is superbly situated and from the terrace you can look down
the Ostriconi valley to the sea, watch a hawk hunting, and later on see the bats do their aerobatics. You can also
- late at night - hear the strange call of the Skops Owl (like a fire alarm with a failing battery) though if you
see one you'll be lucky. The apartment is simple, spacious and cool, with its tiled floors and whitewashed walls
and ceilings. The lounge 'with a kitchen corner' is more a kitchen/diner with a sofa, but you won't want to spend
much time indoors anyway. Madame Ceccaldi is charming and welcoming, though you need better French than ours to
have long conversations, and she may ask you to water the terrace. The village has two restaurants- L'Auberge de
Lama and Campu Latinu - both of which are welcoming and serve good food (duck in fig sauce at the latter especially
recommended) though you're best going to L'Isle Rousse for seafood. The bread van calls every day and stops outside
the house - the other food vans also call but are a bit more elusive. I suspect that some other places, including
the shop, open during the film festival. The local bar - Jul's - was used just by the locals when we were there,
and showed no sign of being a 'pizzeria and restaurant' as advertised. Watching the World Cup Final overlooking
the valley in the open air at the Auberge on our first night is a special memory. The village pool is a bit of
a walk away (though a pleasant walk) and you might as well go to the sea, 20 minutes away at Lozari. Loads of places
to visit and a great place to relax. But don't come here if you want the last word in luxury or to lie by a pool
all day.'
'Hi Claire, we returned from Corsica yesterday after an absolutely
blissful week. Thank you so much for organising everything - we had a really wonderful time and it was a real wrench
to leave Lama yesterday.
Many thanks again.'
'I just wanted to send a quick note to say what a wonderful holiday
we had in Corsica and how well all of the holiday arrangements worked out, despite the really early start on the
Sunday morning!!! The house at Lama was great with incredible views and the owner was very friendly. We ate out
at both of the "Auberge" in the village and used the local swimming pool. The move to Calvi {Rateau Bavoir}
went well and we quickly realised that the beach at Calvi was the best around. We drove down the coast to another
beach but it wasn't as good. I think that if we were to go to Calvi again we probably could do without a hire car.
Anyway, thanks for a great holiday, we hope to go back soon.'
