Set in the beautiful bay of Campomoro, the villa Portu d'Elice is a stunning example of modern architecture with a large swimming pool, beautiful sea views over the rooftops to the sea and just a 10 minute stroll from the village and the shallow sandy beach.

Sitting below the famous 16th century Genoese watchtower, Portu d'Elice is a property that has been designed for comfort and luxury. The floor to ceiling windows dominate the open plan living room and offer panoramic views over the bay from the comfort of the leather armchairs and sofa, whilst the kitchen features a marble workstation and all the modern equipment one would expect from a house of this caliber, such as gas hob, oven, microwave, fridge-freezer, coffee maker, dishwasher, washing machine. There are five bedrooms in all; 2 double rooms and 3 twin bedrooms, all with ensuite bath or shower room, plus a further bathroom and guest toilet. As well as the usual benefits of a television and DVD player, this house also offers a state of the art underfloor cooling system - perfect for those who find air conditioning bothersome, as well as Turkish and whirlpool baths. What more could you ask…

Wrapped around the villa on the first floor is the part covered veranda, where guests can once again enjoy the view over coffee and croissants, or perhaps even a home cooked meal of locally caught fish if you don't fancy sampling one of the local restaurants. The veranda offers both sun and shade throughout the day. Doors from the living room on the ground floor lead open on to the main terrace with timber garden furniture and paved steps leading through the lawned garden filled with vibrantly coloured flowers to the large pool (11 x 5.5m). There is also a barbecue, and if you are lucky, Tito the pool man may catch you some fresh fish!

There is just one road to/from the village which in spring is lined with wild flowers; poppies, lavender, yellow broom, asphodels, and a carpet of daisies. As the road dips the other side, you have the most amazing view over the beach of Campomoro with the tower behind. The shallow sandy bay is almost impossibly tempting even early and late season, when the crystal clear turquoise blue waters are quickly warmed by the sun. The beach forms a huge crescent shape with a smattering of old stone cottages at either end, backed by luxurious new villas looking out to sea. There are half a dozen café-bars and restaurants and a couple of shops, which in the summer filled with divers and jetskiers as well as those admiring the view although in spring and autumn when Campomoro is at its most peaceful, they are not all open.

One cannot talk of Campomoro without mentioning the Genoese tower. Recently, the tower has been converted into a mini visitor centre and there are now guided tours offered for a few euros. The tower at Campomoro is the largest of all the Genoese Towers and was originally designed to have two floors rather than just one. The plans were changed due to continual bad weather during construction so the tower is now the same height but almost twice the diameter. It was predominantly used as a coastal defence and from here one can truly appreciate the strategic positioning.

Ignoring the obvious attractions of the superb sandy beach and the impressive Genoese tower, Campomoro is the gateway to a stunning 'Sentier du Littoral' coastal path. This is a vast area of wild, protected coastline with rocky outcrops, creeks and little beaches of pebble and sometimes sand. Starting from I Pozzi behind the tower, you have the choice to head south towards Tizzano - apparently if you walk as far as the Anse d'Agulia where the huge rock formations look like penguins and a giant turtle - or north towards Propriano and the Capo Bianco. There is also a collection of taffoni where the rocks have been sculpted by the wind and now resemble animals and even human faces at the right angle.

Linen is included in the price of the rental.
