The stunning beaches and breathtaking mountains of Corsica

Paesotel E Caselle, Venaco ***
Pool, gym, jacuzzi, sauna, satellite TV, telephone, restaurant, hiking, tennis, mountain bike hire, mountain and river activities

Nestled amongst the beautiful beeches and laricio pines, the Paesotel E Caselle is truly a hidden gem. The design of the hotel has been inspired by the ancient stone bergeries scattered throughout the island, but this humble exterior belies the wealth of facilities and activities on offer.

On the banks of the river Vecchio, the hotel has been decorated in the authentic rustic style of a traditional Corsican auberge, and boasts superb views over Vallée du Tavignano. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, each with en-suite bath or shower room, and have been equipped with satellite television, telephone, mini-bar, hairdryer and a safe.

Corsica is well known for the beauty of its mountains and rivers, and here one can experience the best of both. Nature enthusiasts will love walking and hiking in the forests, whilst the more active and adventurous can try tennis, mountain-biking, horseriding or even canyoning - an exhilarating water descent. If you simply want to recharge your batteries, the hotel also has a gymnasium, sauna and Jacuzzi (some activities at an extra charge) as well as the lovely swimming pool where you can relax and soak up the sun. There is restaurant offering good value half-board for residents (compulsory during July and August) - why not try the local river trout.

The elegant village of Venaco stands on the lower slopes of Monte Padro, and is home to a lovely baroque church with fabulous views over the valley, and an unusual trompe d'oeil depicting Abraham and Isaac. The name comes from the word VEN meaning mountain, and the area certainly lives up to its name. As summer turns to autumn, the intense green of the forest is sprinkled with hues golden yellow and burnt orange and it is easy to see why the Venachese is one of the most popular areas on the island for walking. The local tourist office can provide maps and guides including the 'Balades en Corse, sentier du pays venachais' with marked walks and trails. Perhaps the best know of these is the 'Pont de Noceta' - a four hour return trip with the opportunity to bathe in rock pools en-route.

Surprisingly, it is only 15 minutes drive to Corte, the historic capital of the island where one can visit the Musée de la Corse at the very top of the old Citadel, and within approximately 45 minutes you can reach the superb sandy beaches of the east coast.

During May, the village is host to the 'A Fiera di u Casgiu' - the island's premiere cheese festival where cheese makers from all over the island compete. There are tastings and you can also find stands for artisans, craftsmen and other specialities.
