Dominating the pretty port of Bonifacio, the impressive stone Citadel
is perhaps one of the most intriguing of all. Inside the walls, the old town which dates back to 833, has managed
to retain its medieval charm and character, with narrow cobbled streets and tall sun-bleached houses huddled together.
Studio Saint-Dominique is situated on the fourth (top) floor of one of these old ramshackle houses at the heart
of the citadel. Recently restored using local materials such as juniper beams, limestone walls and terracotta earthen
tiles, this lovely studio now offers an elegant and contemporary base from which to explore this enchanting town
and the extreme south. The main living room offers a double sofabed, two windows and a flat screen television.
The kitchen has been equipped with two hobrings, oven with integrated microwave, fridge-freezer, dishwasher, washing
machine and dryer. There is a separate shower room and toilet, and the studio also benefits from air conditioning
for the added comfort of guests. A small west window gives a lovely view to the old military quarters, the church
of Saint-Dominique from which the studio takes its name and the Montlaur quartier, and another low window on the
north side of the living room opens onto a view towards the port in the distance and the Cagna mountains beyond.
The Citadel is the oldest part of Bonifacio and remains very unspoilt with steep roads winding between high and
impressive houses, so the Studio Saint-Dominique is not recommended to the elderly or anyone with walking difficulties.
However, there is so much to see and do in Bonifacio and the surrounding areas, that many visitors tell us that
a week is simply not long enough!
Wander through the alleyways where you will find a selection of boutiques offering souvenirs and beautiful hand
crafted items, as well as a good choice of restaurants, some with views across the straights to Sardinia just 12km
away. The Marine cemetery is a must-see. Perched at the very edge of the town overlooking the sea, the silence
and slight eerie atmosphere is a stark contrast to the lively, colourful atmosphere of the rest of the Citadel.
Vistors can also visit the magnificent King of Aragon steps carved out of the cliff face, and the church of Saint
Dominique, one of the island's few Gothic buildings.
Sailors and fun-boarders will be in their element at the nearby beaches of La Tonnara, Piantarella, Santa Manza
and Balistra. The windsurfing in this area is reputed to be some of the best in France, and in May 'RIPCURL' the
French Funboarding championships are normally held here.
The best way to admire the town is to take one of the numerous boats trips where you will have a spectacular view
of the limestone cliffs and discover the caves all along the coast. Submarine life is every bit as extraordinary
and a haven for divers who can visit the Reserve Naturelle des Bouches de Bonifacio between Bonifacio and Sardinia
which is the most visited area with outstanding dive conditions. Here you will find the Lavezzi Islands and the
stunning marine reserve, known for the friendly groupers, brown meager, moray eel, scorpion fish, spiny lobster,
cuttlefish, octopus and dentex as well as amazing deep red coral, starfish, and anemones. Corsica also lies within
the boundaries of the French Cetacea Sanctuary where one can find the highest concentrations of whales and Dolphins
in the Mediterranean.
The sandy beaches nearby, range of water sports and harbour-front cafes are an obvious attraction, but be sure
to take time to discover the towns and villages nearby. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle, head up into
the Alta Rocca where you can find some of the most breath-taking and dramatic mountain scenes on the island. The
Col de Bavella in particular is not to be missed. The Bonifacio countryside is criss-crossed with numerous lanes
bordered by stone walls and paths that lend themselves perfectly to exploring the fragrant scrubland on foot, and
the area is rich with flora and fauna such as herons, kingfishers and Hermann's tortoises.
Linen is included in the rental.
