The hotel has been in the Martelli family for generations, and Monsieur
will happily recount stories of times gone by and give a personal insight into the history of the island of which
he is justly proud. The Corsican style 'salon' even boasts two original oil paintings that date back to the times
of Michelangelo. Whilst continuing to add little touches each year to improve the comfort of the hotel such as
the small but comfortable television area with flat screen tv, the owners have managed to maintain the traditional
feel for those clients who return year after year for the more simple pleasures such as direct access to the beach
below, a good quality restaurant, friendly but unobtrusive owners and lovely views over the bay of Algajola.
All bedrooms have either a double or twin beds, toilet and shower room. The rooms have been simply furnished in
keeping with the traditional style of the hotel and many still retain the original tiled floors. The sea view rooms
are directly above the beach which means that on balmy summer evenings, you can leave the windows open and be lulled
to sleep by the sound of the waves gently lapping the shore - bliss.
The Hotel de la Plage offers a choice of either bed and breakfast or full board, so the hotel is equally suited
to those for whom planning their evening meal is almost as important as the meal itself, and those who prefer to
know that everything is arranged for them in advance. The restaurant has a good reputation, and serves a range
of regional specialiaties and local produce according to season. In the mornings, guests can help themselves to
bread, croissants, jams, cereal, and even cold cuts, cheese and fruit as well as excellent coffee, tea and a choice
of fruit juices. Breakfast can be taken either in the light an airy restaurant overlooking the terrace and the
sea, or outside on the terrace itself just above the beach.
There is also a bar where guests often congregate to chat about the day's activities, and at the front of the hotel
is a pleasant shaded terrace where one can enjoy a coffee or aperitif from the bar before venturing into the village,
or indeed a nightcap before bed.
The pace of life is slow in Algajola, and the Hotel de la Plage provides a simple and relatively inexpensive base
for those who want to be just a stones throw from the beach, and within easy walking distance of all the facilities
of the village. Quieter than the neighbouring resorts of Calvi and Ile Rousse, Algajola was once a fishing village,
and even today has managed to retain its charm and ancient ambiance. The village is relatively sleepy for most
of the year, and one can wander the narrow streets and follow the ramparts of the old Castello undisturbed. However,
during July and August the village really comes alive and the village takes on an altogether more lively atmosphere.
Spring and autumn are ideal for walkers and those who like to explore. Should you fancy a change of pace, there
is a small station in the village, so the bigger resorts and even the mountains are easily accessible.

Comments from previous guests...
'Thank you so much for your help in arranging our holiday. We
had a lovely time, briliant weather and it was so good to see Jacques and Elisabeth. And Mme Martelli senior. Plus
a couple of other people whom we had not seen for about 20 years even though we had visited de la Plage a few times
in between then and now, which was so nice. One person Antoine I had played with in a boules competition on 14th
July 1988 - and we won second prize. The medal (key ring) I still have. He is now 70 and came to see us off at
the station and waved to the train as we passed his house as we departed. Hotel de la Plage as you probably know
is dividing into two hotels - de la Plage Les Arcades and de la Plage Vitto'ria (J and E). But the welcome, the
service, comfortable rooms and how scrupulously clean the hotel is kept is fab. A joy. We will return in a couple
of years no doubt. By train or car or foot who knows...'
