Nestled on the hillside at the edge of the beautiful village of Speloncato,
Maison les Calanches is an ancient granite house which has recently been renovated to offer a comfortable base
for those who are looking for authentic village holiday, which is nonetheless never far from the superb sandy beaches
and lively waterfront towns of the Balagne coast.
Reached via a narrow stepped village path, a few stone steps lead up to the main entrance. The fully equipped kitchen
is to the right of the hallway with a window looking out over the mountains, and an archway leads through to comfortably
furnished living room with sofa, dining table and chairs, and original sculpted ceilings and floor tiles which
add to the character and charm of the house. French doors from the main living room lead onto the balcony which
enjoys lovely views over the valley and surrounding mountains to the sea. What could be better than enjoying an
aperitif while the sun sets, before venturing out to eat. A narrow wooden staircase leads up to the first floor
where there is a double bedroom with en suite bathroom and toilet, and a twin bedroom plus a shower room with toilet.
Outside there is a garden terraced on three levels.
From the house you can climb up the steep footpath to the village. Here there is a café and restaurant where
you can sit and while away the time watching the hustle and bustle of village life. There is a village shop where
you can buy bread and some essentials, which is normally open in the mornings and early evening every day except
possibly Monday. Travelling shops - bakers, butchers, grocers, cheese and dairy products, greengrocery, fish -
visit the village during the week.
Speloncato owes its name to the nearby ravines (e Spelunche in Corsican). Clinging to the rocks, the village is
the highest, and without a doubt one of the most beautiful in the Balagne. Once one of the fortress villages, tight
clusters of haphazard houses were built high and huddled together gathered around the pretty market square in the
shadow of Monte Grosso massif.
A curious eclipse takes place twice a year, in March and September, when the sun, having set, shines again through
a natural opening in the rock known as 'a Petra Tafonata'. The village is the gateway to the Tartagine, an area
of lush verdant countryside, and is particular pretty in spring when ground is carpeted by wild poppies. There
is a beautiful Romanesque style church Eglise St-Michel which houses a collection of paintings and sculptures,
and a bell tower which dates back to 1913.
NOTE: steep
steps and drops may make it unsuitable for very young children.
Linen is included in the price of the rental.
