Wander through the narrow cobbled streets, and one cannot help but be impressed
by the village of Calenzana. Superbly situated at the very edge of the mountains, whilst still just a short drive
from the superb sandy beach and the bustling waterfront town of Calvi, it is easy to see why Calenzana has become
so popular with those who want to experience the very best that Corsica has to offer.
Just a short stroll from the centre of the village and the impressive baroque church of St. Blaise opposite and
its beautiful bell tower built in the 1870's, Tchétché and Liline can be found. These two apartments
are full of character, and are particularly suited to guests who will appreciate the tranquil setting and peaceful
ambiance.
Tchétché (lower
apartment)
The main entrance opens onto the spacious hallway and like many old Corsican
houses, all the other rooms lead off from this central area. The sitting room has been furnished with beautiful
carved wooden furniture including some very nice antique pieces, and the double aspect picture windows enjoy views
over the village. There are two bedrooms in all; one with a beautiful carved wooden bed (slightly smaller than
a standard) and the large master bedroom with double aspect picture windows which has been furnished in keeping
with the traditional feel of the apartments. Both bedrooms enjoy views over the garden with its mandarin trees
and what could be better than waking to the sound of the stream beyond as the water ripples along. There is also
a double sofabed should you need more flexible sleeping arrangements. The kitchen is small but well equipped with
a full cooker, microwave, fridge freezer, top loading washing machine and cafetiere, and also looks out over the
garden. There is also a simple shower room, washbasin with toilet. Outside is a terrace area with a table where
you can eat al-fresco or simply relax and enjoy the peaceful setting, but Tchétché's crowning glory
is the pretty garden where you can sit and relax in the dappled shade offered by the Mandarin and Lemon trees.

Liline (upper apartment)
Situated on the first floor, the entrance to Liline is from the balcony which is reached via steps leading up from
the terrace of Tchétché below. The door opens onto the dining area which is furnished with a table
and chairs, beautiful wooden dresser and a glass fronted display cabinet. There are two double bedrooms, each with
double bed. The first bedroom enjoys views over the garden whilst the master bedroom boasts a large window overlooking
the garden and French doors to the balcony with views over the red tiled roofs of the village to the sea beyond.
Both bedrooms have been furnished in the traditional style with carved wooden furniture. The kitchen is a little
outmoded, but well equipped nonetheless, with a full cooker, fridge with icebox, top loading washing machine and
small table and chairs for two people. There is also a simple bathroom with traditional half-bath, washbasin and
toilet. For more photos, CLICK HERE
The furnishings have been passed down through the family from generation to generation and hold great sentimental
value for the proprietors. Each apartment also boasts a television for those who don't want to venture into the
village in the evenings, and heating should you wish to visit outside of the main season. Guests should be aware
as the building is very old, if both apartments are occupied, from time to time the guests in the lower apartment
may be able to hear footsteps from above.
There is always something going on in Calenzana, from the candlelit evening parade on 21st May when locals pay
homage to Saint Restitude and the streets are lined with candles and garlands, to the classical music at the end
of August. However, many guests tell us that it is the friendly atmosphere and the smell of freshly baked beignets
(doughnuts) wafting through the narrow streets that draws them back time and time again!
Please remember that bed linen and one towel per person is provided,
but you should take your own beach towels and any extra towels you may require.

Comments from previous guests...
'This was a rare opportunity to stay in a authentic Corsican
home in a splendid local village. There is no feeling of being in a holiday apartment so if you want high tech
living and all mod cons this is not for you. Instead there are high ceilings, original shutters (not perfect!),
antiques, old family photographs, a wonderful array of old mis-matched French crockery, a charming little garden,
and the sense of living among the many higgledy piggledy alleys, small streets and infinitely varied houses spread
up the hillside of the old village. Walking around the small streets of the village at night is remarkable. Also
the walk from the village to A Flatte restaurant (open Sat and Sun lunchtimes and most evenings) is very scenic.
The path continues for another 30 mins at least until a small plateau is reached amidst a grand mountain landscape.'
'We had a lovely time in Liline at Calenzana. The cottage is
exactly as described. It is tucked away 2minutes from the main square, so manages to be both private and secluded,
whilst close to the 'action' (Well, the Church car park, shops, cafe and 3 restaurants... Chez Michel is the best,
as every guide book will tell you). The apartment has 2 balconies with great views and was perfect for relaxing
and getting away from it all, which was exactly what we needed on our honeymoon. Calenzana is a great base for
North Corsica, being close to the beaches at Calvi, as well as great mountain and forest walks in the interior.
It has all you need for facilities - many local artesan food shops, including wine tasting at local vineyards.
There is also a supermarket for everything else. The one drawback was having to drive to Calvi for a laundarette,
but even this was very easy. The apartment owners were also great and couldn't have been more helpful if we had
any questions. All in all, Liline was lovely, romantic and highly recommended.'
'We had a lovely holiday staying in this delightful apartment.
It is in an excellent location for exploring the area. The apartment has a charmingly traditional atmosphere, cool
on hot days; it is clean and well-equipped. We particularly enjoyed sitting out in the garden late in the evening,
under the citrus trees. We enjoyed meeting members of the family and appreciated their welcome and good company.
A fantastic place to stay!'
